ISFA Six-A-Side Tournament

Pepsi Academy UK Scholarship Boy Outstanding

The 2012 ISFA Six-a-Side Tournament kicked off another season of competitive independent schools football on Sunday 9th September. The King’s School, Chester, hosted the competition for the first time and did a magnificent job with the pitches in perfect condition.

Bradfield, Repton and Millfield impressed during the morning matches, Repton being the only school to win all five of their group matches, but a special mention should go to newcomers University College School who finished as runners-up in Group A and qualified for the Cup quarter-finals.

As always, tiredness was a major factor in the afternoon matches and the teams that had conserved energy by keeping possession found themselves with the advantage. Even more evident, however, was the importance of taking chances and having a proven goalscorer in the team. Repton’s 100% record disappeared when they were defeated on penalties by Ardingly after a goalless draw, whilst Bede’s (formerly St. Bede's School) and Bradfield needed just a solitary goal to defeat Bolton and Charterhouse respectively. Only Millfield proved prolific in the quarter-finals, ending UCS’s adventure with a 4-1 win.

In the semi-finals, Ardingly played out yet another goalless draw with Millfield, once again coming through in the penalty shoot-out, whilst Bede’s match with Bradfield proved a high quality encounter, the excellence of Rilwan Olugbode proving crucial as he scored twice in a 3-1 win. His first goal, when he won the ball on the edge of his own penalty area and ran 90 yards to score, was surely the highlight of the day.

The all-Sussex Final proved a question of whether the excellent Olugbode could break down an Ardingly defence that had not conceded a goal all day. Bede’s enjoyed more possession and, despite heroic Ardingly resistance, it was Olugbode who scored the crucial goal to enable Bede’s to retain the title they won in 2011, the first school for 42 years to win the Cup two years in succession.
